Logistics: Job Title: Engineer in Training Company, Department: Nova Scotia Power – Capital Projects Location: Wreck Cove, Nova Scotia Canada Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience Type of Employment: Regular, Full Time Reference Number: 11678 The Opportunity: The Opportunity: NS Power is currently in the execution phase of a Life Extension & Modernization (LEM) effort for the largest Hydro Generating Station in Nova Scotia. The Wreck Cove Generating Station is located in Cape Breton, on the Cabot Trail. We are currently looking for an Engineer in Training to join our team in a permanent position. Reporting to the Senior Engineer, and as an integral member of our team, you will contribute to the development, management and delivery of the Wreck Cove LEM and future projects. The Engineer in Training will support the Nova Scotia Power Capital Project Execution Group with a focus on the Wreck Cove Life Extension & Modernization Project and will work closely with Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) vendors, engineering consultants, operations, planning and maintenance teams to ensure assigned tasks are properly planned and executed within agreed schedule, scope and budget. Why consider this role? Our unique Hydro System The Wreck Cove Hydro System has been providing clean, renewable energy for Nova Scotians for over 40 years. The Wreck Cove Generating Station is the largest Hydro facility in Nova Scotia with a generating capacity of 212 MW. It’s also one of Nova Scotia Power’s more unique Hydro sites. The water is conveyed to the powerhouse through a series of tunnels and canals, and the powerhouse itself is located 275 feet underground, down a 620 metre access tunnel. Unique Technical Challenge Through this project and in our specialized work environment, you'll embark on an exhilarating journey of accelerated learning and skill development. Dive into a wide spectrum of challenging tasks that will broaden your competencies. As part of this role, you'll have the privilege to: 1. Collaborate closely with OEMs, gaining invaluable insights and expanding your network. 2. Explore fabrication shops to witness firsthand the construction and deconstruction of power generation units, including generators. 3. Engage with specialist hydro consultants, learning from the best in the field. Key Elements of the role include: Assisting with the review of the technical submittals, assisting preparation for engineering specifications, design reviews, taking on small tasks (under supervision of the Senior Engineer) Ensuring that project management processes and procedures are implemented to support the successful completion of the project. Under the guidance of the Senior Engineer assist in management of contractors and consultants. Assisting in management of Contractor Safety documentation. Assisting in procurement activities including preparation of RFP packages, responding to RFIs and participating in proposal evaluations. Participating in Lessons Learned exercises throughout projects as well as at completion. Assisting in maintaining the integrated project plan and schedule. Reviewing technical drawings and specifications to ensure accuracy, quality, and conformance to NSPI standards. Liaising with Information Management team to ensure technical documents are properly maintained and archived. Preparing technical documentation packages for handover to Operations team following project completion. Contributing to a work environment based on mutual trust and respect while carrying out all work in a safe and effective manner. This position does include periods of extensive travel and fieldwork, often in remote locations of Nova Scotia. What skills will make you successful? You recognize yourself in most of the following competencies, and where possible possess the skills and experience listed below: You possess a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or its equivalent. You are a registered member or eligible for membership of Engineers Nova Scotia (ENS) You are a self-starter with excellent organizational and analytical skills who is able to function effectively in a team environment. You possess strong communication and interpersonal skills, strong computer skills, a demonstrated commitment to personal development, a valid Driver’s License, and a willingness to provide after-hours consultation and emergency power restoration work. Experience in a power utility or an industrial setting would be a definite asset.
