Limited-Term Appointment in Environment & Society

The Environment & Society program at St. Thomas University invites applications for a 24-month

limited-term appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, to begin July 1st, 2024, pending budgetary

approval. Environment & Society understands sustainability as a normative process of reimagining and

reconstructing social systems that support people and the planet, rather than the pursuit of technological

fixes. The successful candidate will have knowledge of systems theory and systems transitions.

St. Thomas University is an undergraduate, liberal arts institution with a full-time enrolment of 1,600.

Its students graduate with Bachelor of Arts, Applied Arts, Education, and Bachelor and Master level

Social Work degrees. The faculty members are distinguished teachers, researchers, and scholars, and the

university holds two Canada Research Chairs.

The Environment & Society program seeks candidates with a demonstrated potential for excellence in

undergraduate teaching in sustainability and systems transitions. An active research area in this field is

also expected. The successful candidate will teach introductory and advanced courses in sustainability,

systems theory, and systems transitions. The successful applicant will be expected to use a systems

transitions approach to teach courses such as Critical Food Studies, Environmental Communications,

Urban Sustainability Planning, and Health and Sustainability. Competencies in participatory and

experiential learning pedagogies would be considered an asset.

A PhD in environmental or sustainability studies is required. Completed applications must include a

letter of application that describes the applicant’s teaching experience, scholarly interests and

achievements, and potential contributions to the program as specified in the qualifications listed above.

The application must also include a curriculum vitae and a teaching dossier that provides evidence of

teaching effectiveness, such as sample course syllabi, teaching evaluations, and a statement of teaching

philosophy. Applicants should also submit a statement of current and prospective research interests and

activities, samples of scholarly work, and arrange to have three letters of reference sent electronically to

Dr. Laura Levick, Chair of the ENVS LTA Hiring Committee, St. Thomas University,
