Autism Nova Scotia delivers programming in Halifax and in nine communities across Nova Scotia through our Regional Autism Centres. Our three program divisions are: Social & Community Inclusion; Employment Support; and Family and Caregiver Support.
Community Leadership Program Educator
POSITION: 5-Month Term, part time (10-15 hours/week)
START DATE: February 2024
LOCATION : New Germany, Nova Scotia (New Germany Rural High School)
DEPARTMENT: Employment and Community Transitions Department
DIRECT REPORT: Program Supervisor

HOURLY SALARY: $20 / Hour

SUMMARY:
Community Leadership (CL) is a program designed to support Autistic youth / youth on the autism spectrum aged 14-18 in enhancing skills and knowledge within their communities. Through a person directed approach, CL staff support participants with goal setting, community engagement, and skill building.
As a Community Leadership Program Educator, you will be supporting participants at New Germany Rural High School in group discussion and activities, as well as going into community organizations to gain volunteer experience.
Community Leadership Program Educators play a key role in supporting participants as they work towards their goals and exercise self-determination within the community.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Valid Criminal Record Check (required)
  • Valid Child Abuse Registry Check (required)
  • Valid CPR and First Aid Certification (considered an asset)

Minimum experience:

  • Knowledge and experience working with Autistic individuals / individuals on the autism spectrum or other developmental disabilities, and/or experience in supported employment
  • Experience navigating complex support needs (considered an asset)
  • Experience with alternative forms of communication (i.e., PECs, iPad, sign language) (considered an asset)

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Facilitate weekly sessions to a group
  • Prepare materials prior to sessions
  • Review PowerPoints in advance
  • Attend team meetings
  • Support participants at volunteer experiences and group discussion sessions
  • Collaborate with designated contact at New Germany Rural High School
  • Collaborate with and consult the Community Leadership Supervisor to ensure exceptional support is delivered
  • Navigate and support participants in identifying and working toward goals and skill development
  • Recruit non profit organizations for volunteer experience
  • Adhere to all ANS policies and procedures
  • Administrative tasks as needed
  • Other duties as required

Assets

  • Post-secondary education or equivalent experience in a related field (considered an asset)
  • Valid NS Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle
