Job Description
POSITION OVERVIEW: The Globe and Mail is seeking an accomplished business journalist or editor for a leading role in our Globe Advisor vertical. The assistant editor will drive our daily coverage of industry news and trends, markets and funds, and the ins and outs of running a financial advisory practice. The successful candidate will work with the Globe Advisor editor and a team of freelance reporting staff to elevate our work in print and online, including multimedia executions. Candidates must be well-versed in financial markets and have, or have a strong desire to develop, a deep understanding of Canada’s community of financial advisors and the information they need to be successful. The assistant editor will be a main point of daily contact for Globe Advisor writers, both staff and freelance, liaise frequently with other editors in Report on Business, develop and communicate coverage plans, and generate compelling story and column ideas that set us apart from the competition. We’re looking for someone who takes an innovative and entrepreneurial approach to journalism, including a strong desire to improve our reach on social media. The successful candidate will be a proven journalist or editor who has demonstrated strong ability as an assignment editor and who works effectively with top writing and editing talent, supporting them toward breaking news, insightful features, and longer-term projects with impact. The assistant editor will seize on a clearly articulated vision for Globe Advisor and run with it. This is a union position, group AA, reporting to Globe Advisor editor Pablo Fuchs, and is a regular full-time position. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Strong skills in substantive editing: the ability to edit for structure, meaning, clarity, tone and libel. Comfortable in digital and print environments. Study and adhere to The Globe’s Editorial Code of Conduct and Editorial Style Guide. Work with editors, writers, UX designers and other Globe staff to deliver stories that are aligned with the goal of attracting a wider audience of advisors who will ultimately register and subscribe. Ability to create or oversee the development of content formats spanning text, photo, video, graphics, audio, optimized for mobile consumption. Analyze analytics to improve content strategies and generate more traffic. Establish, track and assure adherence to budgets. Use content management system to optimize content formats, co-ordinate story posting with our production teams, and ensure quality standards are met. and build the audience on those platforms Stay ahead of emerging trends in an ever-changing landscape. QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum of 3 years of experience in digital media. Experience in print media is an asset. Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field. Superior assigning, editing and writing skills, including display copy. Ability to quickly understand industry trends, and translate complex ideas into an editorial direction. Experience with social media across platforms. Critical thinker who is curious, highly analytical, and a problem solver. Project management skills to maintain editorial schedules and deadlines. Understanding of SEO and SEM best practices and experience implementing information architecture to make content easier to discover. Oral presentation skills an asset for participation in events as moderator, speaker, etc. A self-starter who takes ownership of multiple project-based tasks; a proactive, innovative and accountable problem solver. Suited for fast-paced, results-based environment, requiring flexibility to adapt to evolving needs. A team player who brings an enthusiastic approach to journalism. An ability to demonstrate creativity, a willingness to experiment, to thrive on change, and to view the occasional failure as a learning experience. SALARY: This position is classified under Group AA of the Collective Agreement.
