About Us

The Correctional Services Division of the Department of Justice is responsible for the administration and operation of community and custody-based programs and services for adults and young persons. Within the Correctional Services core business area there are two programs: Community Corrections & correctional facilities. Each of these program areas is broken down into closely related activities that have a specific impact on the program?۪s target group.

Community Corrections has 22 offices across the province from Yarmouth to Sydney and is responsible for the supervision of both adult and young persons serving community-based sentences. Probation Officers also supervise those released from custody on conditional releases and prepare pre-sentence investigations to assist the Courts in the sentencing process. Evidence-based Program facilitation and supports to specialized courts in areas of domestic violence, mental health and wellness are also part of the role of a Probation Officer as well as Restorative Justice casework and collaboration with community justice agencies.

Five (5) adult correctional facilities (1 Female and 4 Male) and one (1) youth centre provide the safety and security of persons in custody while providing programs that address dynamic criminogenic factors to assist with their successful, reintegration into the community.

Nova Scotia Correctional Services utilizes an evidence-based approach in both Community Corrections and custodial facilities. Core Correctional Practices (CCP) is the foundational practice that drives reintegration and rehabilitation practices deployed within Correctional Services. Utilizing CCP, Correctional Services staff can effectively interact, manage behaviour, and help facilitate change, within target populations.

About Our Opportunity

The Training Officer is responsible to contribute to the development of employees by providing training and development to support Correctional Services, with a focus on facility training. The Training Officer must maintain current knowledge of the various programs and services of the Department, as well as the associated tools and technologies to support the delivery of Correctional Services programs and services. Additionally, they must be familiar with Correctional Services Policy and Procedures in order to guide the training curriculum. Under the direction of the Manager of Training and Development, the Training Officer is responsible for identifying staff training and development needs, and for planning, organizing and delivering appropriate facility training.

Qualifications And Experience

As a successful candidate, you possess a Bachelor's Degree along with minimum 5 years of experience as a full-time Correctional Service employee. Previous experience in training/facility training or program facilitation will be considered an asset.

During the interview, the successful candidate will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of currently accepted correctional strategies and philosophies. Demonstrate innovation, creativity and an ability to address social issues and emerging challenges for staff working with diverse offender populations. Other competencies that must be demonstrated are effective communication and interpersonal skills along with sound leadership abilities to support the development of good rapport with staff and offenders. Sound decisions-making, problem solving abilities and a capacity for developing and leading a team is required.

The successful candidate must demonstrate an attitude toward the criminal justice system that is compatible with the objectives of the Department of Justice and the Correctional Services Division, which will be evident through good performance and attendance record for the past 12 months.

Pay Grade: PR 13

Salary Range: $2,543.38 - $3,091.70 Bi-Weekly
