JOB PURPOSE As an Organ Donor Coordinator (ODC) you will provide support and expertise for potential and actual organ donations, for the donors, their families and the interdisciplinary team. This position will require on call responsibilities and travel within the province of New Brunswick for organ donation related activities. You will organize, promote and drive organ and tissue initiatives throughout the province for medical and allied health professionals, as well as the public. As an ODC, you will champion and promote organ and tissue donation programs, thus providing every donor the opportunity (option) to donate as part of end-of-life care. As per Health Canada, the ODC will act as a Medical Director Designee in determining the safety of organs for release.Qualifications Bachelor of Nursing Degree Minimum of two (2) years current ICU/ED experience (within the past 5 years) ACLS an asset Demonstrate competency with Microsoft Office Current registration with the Nurses Association of New Brunswick Ability to perform venipuncture, initiate peripheral IVs, access and provide care for venous access devices (or willingness to obtain skill set) Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel within NB Demonstrates initiative and effective communication and organizational skills Physically able to perform the job and hold good attendance record The successful applicant shall be constantly motivated to keep up to date on new research developments and be willing to attend medical and educational conferences Ability to attend work on a regular basis Ability to perform the duties of the position Good work record Key Responsibilities The Organ Donor Coordinator will act as a Medical Director’s Designee in determining the safety of organs for release. Assist with maintenance of donor following guidelines including any necessary testing such as echocardiogram, regular blood tests, and bronchoscopy as well as a cardiac catheterization in facilities where available; Proceed with Organ Offering to Transplant Programs based on National agreements. Assist with arrangements for the retrieval or organs, including arranging OR time and staff, logistics of arrival time of transplant teams arriving, arranging pick up of teams and equipment, and transportation of organs following retrieval. Assist, as necessary, with retrieval of organs, ensure proper documentation (according to Health Canada Regulations) is completed; Ensure all documentation with regards to organ retrieval is complete and concise, including a log of all activities during the process. Participate on different Organ and Tissue donation Committee; Call in patients on waiting list – notify of transplant and review Current health and medications; Perform regular death chart audits; Answer all inquiries left on the 24-hour Provincial line; Donor family correspondence as required; Provide support to ICU and ER staff with regards to Organ Donation Develop, implement and follow up on educational sessions and opportunities for healthcare professionals and public, including: Public presentations (workplace, luncheons, association meetings, attending staff meetings, attending unit rounds, etc); Assist with donor identification and donor management; Establish and Maintain good working relationship with all facilities within your designated area; Collaborate with various associations whose mandate includes Organ Donation Awareness; On-call responsibility Day, Nights, Weekends, Statutory Holidays. May be required to work long hours for donation activities. Hours may vary, Subject to change due to operational requirements.
