Job Description
Job Summary Reporting to the AVP Teaching and Learning Centre, the Learning Designer partners with faculty in course design for online, hybrid and classroom learning experiences. Working closely with faculty, the Learning Designer assists in the creation of engaging learning environments through the application of learning design theories, practice and methods. The Learning Designer has a strong technical background and is able to assist faculty with digital resources, software, and applications. From assessing faculty requirements, the Learning Designer makes recommendations for learning activities, assessments, technological tools and resources that are appropriate for the course, learning outcomes, and student learning. Working with ITS team members and faculty/student focus groups, the Learning Designer facilitates and supports the assessment and implementation of existing and new learning management systems. Collaborates with faculty members, and assists in the development of student-centered learning experiences and assessments for online, hybrid, and face-to-face courses Leverages emerging educational technologies, universal design principles, and learning research to enhance the student learning experience Creates customizable learning resources within current and new LMSs, including templates and examples of interactive modules, multimedia content, and assessments. Collaborates with the IT department to troubleshoot and provide ongoing technical support to faculty when issues arise related to LMSs (be available by email, online, and in-person to answer questions quickly) Advises faculty on best practices for online and blended learning, and how to integrate technology effectively into teaching Ensures that the selected LMS and associated materials meet accessibility standards to accommodate UFV’s diverse learners. Designs and implements workshops for faculty to ensure ease of transition to new LMSs Develops training materials, such as PDF guides, tutorials, and video resources, to support faculty in learning the features and functionalities of the university’s LMS Collaborates with Learning Specialists to offer pedagogical support to faculty around teaching and learning best practices. Assists in the incorporation of indigenous ways of knowing into courses through consultation Conducts outreach and follow-up with faculty and departments Develops strong working relationships with faculty and effectively accesses institutional resources Assists in the planning and development of instructional materials, the user interface and multimedia, using backwards design Provides one-on-one virtual or group coaching to assist faculty in increasing their knowledge and skill using the learning management system and other technological resources Reviews and make suggestions for enhancing the student experience Conducts research and analysis on learners and contexts Maintains LMS review project documentation Responds to requests for assistance regarding the learning management system Assists other members of the TLC team as required Qualifications MA, MEd, or MSc degree required in instructional design, educational technology or similar educational fields Excellent knowledge of learning theories and instructional design models Proven working experience in instructional design and with instructional technology Understanding of decolonization, indigenization and reconciliation principles Familiar with internationalization goals, methods and practices Demonstrated experience in lesson and curriculum planning skills Previous teaching experience preferred Basic HTML and programming knowledge Excellent knowledge of course development software, open educational resources and learning management systems Strong facilitation skills Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills Ability to successfully use technology particularly in the online environment Knowledge and understanding of adult learning principles Ability to work effectively in a diverse team environment Effective change management skills Ability to build successful relationships Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously Takes initiative and works independently with minimal supervision Experience managing multiple and competing priorities About UFV The University of the Fraser Valley is located on the traditional territory of the Halq'eméylem-speaking peoples.
