Job Description
POSITION REPORTS TO: Director of Student Success
DIRECT REPORTS: None
WORKS CLOSELY WITH: Teachers, coaches, parents/guardians
TEAMS & COMMITTEES: Student Success Team
COMPENSATION: Compensation equivalent to teacher salary grid
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide support to students with identified and unidentified learning needs, and assist them in developing effective learning strategies;
Work collaboratively with key stakeholders in order to effectively support students with learning differences;
Prepare and share student learning plans from information provided through psycho-educational assessments and update them on an ongoing basis;
Support and coach teachers as they implement specific accommodations outlined in a student learning plan;
Monitor, support and document the progress of students who receive specific accommodations or other supports;
Participate with teachers and other stakeholders in collaboratively communicating with parents regarding student identification, student learning plans, and student progress toward documented goals;
Work closely with and provide support to faculty in the delivery of a variety of teaching and learning strategies that promote best practices for all students and that further the understanding of the unique learning needs of identified students;
Working collaboratively with the Director of Student Success, facilitate professional development sessions and workshops with and for teachers to promote best practices in teaching and social emotional learning;
Model and co-teach to help implement effective learning strategies through differentiation;
Participate in meetings and discussions related to student progress and academic concerns and help prepare for transitions between grade levels;
Working collaboratively with the Director of Student Success and other members of faculty, provide learning skills lessons and workshops for students on a variety of topics related to academic success such as study skills, test preparation and classroom learning strategies;
Advocate for the success of all learners, continually promoting the importance of strong school-to-home partnerships as the foundation for student success.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Demonstrated knowledge of various types of assistive technology and methods to incorporate these into the classroom;
Strong initiative, high energy level, demonstrated ability to give confidence to students in working toward meeting their goals;
Exceptional planning and organizational abilities, with an ability to think creatively and problem-solve effectively;
Strong classroom management and communication skills;
Advanced interpersonal and communication skills with a proven ability to build positive relationships with students, parents/guardians and colleagues;
Understanding of psycho-educational assessments and the interpretation of these and other reports and how to implement their recommendations in a school setting;
Comprehensive understanding of current educational practices in the areas of documenting and implementing student accommodations, differentiation and modification of curriculum outcomes;
Ability to handle multiple concurrent activities, work under pressure and prioritize work effectively to meet deadlines;
A commitment to continued professional development and growth;
Energy, commitment and a readiness to participate in the co-curricular program and the diverse life of the school community.
EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS:
Nova Scotia teaching certification or equivalent;
Postsecondary degree in Education or related discipline;
Masters degree or special education diplomas with emphasis on different learning styles;
Teaching experience working directly with students, preferably in an independent school setting;
Previous experience in a Learning Support role will be considered an asset.
