Job Description
A Veterinary Education Instructor participates in the delivery of curriculum for the animal welfare industry Veterinary Assistant Program and Veterinary Technician Program. As part of a team of instructors the Veterinary Education Instructor provides a high-quality education experience for students in the Nova Scotia SPCA College of Animal Welfare. The Position continuously evaluates and modifies the delivery of curriculum if and when necessary to ensure that student objectives are being met.
Responsibilities
Immediate responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Deliver curriculum in the classroom and hands-on settings
- Effective classroom management
- Ensure all students are being educated in accordance with program policies
- Evaluate individual students in a constructive manner, provide feedback and serve students equitably
- Maintain academic records for each student
- Participate in ongoing development and research for the program
- Collaborate with other faculty on ongoing projects
- Help to organize guest speakers and field trips
- Develop and modify PowerPoint lectures, labs and new lesson plans when necessary
- Seek out continuing education opportunities related to delivering curriculum, teaching adults, advances in veterinary medicine and related fields
Qualifications
- 5 years minimum of practical experience as a Registered Veterinary Technician or Veterinary Assistant
- Must be in good standing with provincial regulatory associations
- Proficient in Microsoft Office
- Extensive customer service experience is an asset
- Experience with training and mentoring others
- Enthusiasm in teaching methodology
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Excellent time management and organizational skills
- Collaborative attitude with team members
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Good computer (Microsoft Office) and presentation skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively both oral and written; research, develop, present, and promote projects; work independently; prioritize work and meet deadlines.
Additional Information
- This position requires a flexible schedule.
- Evenings and weekends may be required, must be willing to work a flexible schedule.
- Driver’s license is required
Physical Requirements
- Physical ability to walk and/or stand on your feet throughout a normal workday required.
- Physical ability to lift and carry heavy weights regularly.
- Working conditions include working alone, working outside in varying weather conditions, frequent interruptions, and some meetings.
Hours of Work
Hours of work are a minimum of 32 hours per week. Work responsibilities will be scheduled as per the needs of the Nova Scotia SPCA and could occasionally require overtime to meet the needs of the position.
