Chief Engineer

Job Description
The Chief Engineer will manage the staff and physical assets of the steam, ammonia, utilities, fire suppression, water treatment, and effluent treatment systems at Rexdale. As a member of the plant management team, the Chief Operating Engineer has ownership of the Utilities department performance, organizational decisions, continuous improvement, and safety culture. With focus on the boilers and chillers, the Chief Operating Engineer will ensure safe and efficient operation of steam generation, ammonia cooling system, preparation and implementation of capital and expense projects, and collaboration with all plant departments. Implementation of safety procedures and programs designed to ensure regulatory compliance and the minimization of industrial injuries and illnesses, property damage and general liability losses at the Rexdale plant. Core Functions: Lead, supervise and develop Operating Engineers Manage maintenance and operating safety and regulatory requirements associated with TSSA regulated equipment with production and maintenance teams Provide reliable generation of steam for plant processes Ensure total safety, care and control of the ammonia refrigerated system Operate and maintain water treatment systems for the boiler and cooling towers. Operate and maintain effluent treatment systems for the plant including dissolved air flotation equipment, aeration equipment, and retention tanks. Maintain plant water supply, compressed air, nitrogen distribution, sewer systems, HVAC systems and fire protection system. Provide supervision and training for the production operators Planning of annual maintenance shutdown work related to boiler, ammonia & compressed air equipment reliability and regulatory compliance, fire protection maintenance, sewer and water systems maintenance, water & effluent treatment equipment service. Participate in project planning for equipment replacement, upgrade, rebuilds and repairs and work towards reducing overall site energy costs. Full knowledge of and compliance with related Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) as part of the Food and Feed safety programs. Co-operate with other supervisors, operations staff, management, and outside contractors as required. Ability to read and understand written manuals, drawings, work orders, etc. Willingness to learn new procedures and participate in training. Prepare and forward month end report. Ensure compliance with Bunge safety policies by all employees, contractors, and visitors. Update emergency measures plan, safety, ammonia, and boilers manuals as necessary. Maintain adherence to divisional and corporate environmental policies and procedures. Keep management informed of changes in policies both governmental and within Bunge along with keeping management informed of issues within the plant. Participate in the Supervisor on call schedule to provide off shift and weekend supervision to the entire Rexdale facility. Duties assigned or requested by management. Work Hours: Monday – Friday 40 hours/week. Must be able to work overtime as required. The Company reserves the right to alter the starting and quitting times as well as the working schedules for the efficient operation of the business. Skill/Experience Requirements: TSSA approved 4th Class Operating Engineer Certificate or higher. Demonstrated success in the application of safety standards, compliance with safety regulations, and the promotion of a safe working environment. Proven and demonstrated leadership and management skills within a team-oriented environment. Knowledgeable in water and effluent treatment and water chemistry. Good working knowledge of PC applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook, and SAP. Ability to manage projects related to the maintenance and upgrade of equipment listed under “Main Functions”. Demonstrate knowledge and experience with the mechanical process equipment, process automation systems, boilers, electrical distribution systems, plumbing and instrumentation. Preferred qualifications include 3-5 years of operations experience in the food industry.
