The successful candidate will contribute by providing specialized support to the researchers, writing technical documentation, as well as the installing and maintaining of domain-relevant software suites & tools.Reporting to the Director of Research Software at McGill, the incumbent will work within the Calcul Québec (CQ) organization and join a vibrant team of analysts and ARC systems administrators across several Québec institutions. It is an opportunity to be working with leading edge technology and a team that has installed and operated supercomputers in the Top 500 list (https://www.top500.org/).McGill is a founding member of CQ, a consortium of Québec universities whose objective is to provide advanced research computing services and capabilities to the research community including ARC data centres at the leading edge of technology and highly qualified computing experts. More than 600 research groups take advantage of the resources made available to them by McGill and CQ to conduct research in various fields. McGill is a member of the Digital Research Alliance of Canada (DRAC), the non-profit organization in charge of coordinating ARC efforts throughout Canada.The ARC environment includes High Performance Computing clusters consisting of over one thousand nodes with a mixture of CPU and GPU processors, a cloud environment, parallel file systems (Lustre), virtualization and container environments, as well as a multi-petabyte disk and tape storage environment with backup and archive capabilities.Primary ResponsibilitiesEvaluate researcher needs and expectations and collaborate with other analysts to find appropriate solutions. Develop, support, and deliver training activities designed for HSS researchers and their teams, including tools and best practices for using advanced digital research infrastructure.Ensure the technological support provided to research teams is in accordance with the requirements of granting agencies relating to the management of research data.Recommend approaches to improve the efficiency and quality of analytical research tools.Liaise with researchers, Calcul Québec team members, and national team members when appropriate.Provide expertise and technical guidance on suitable digital infrastructure and applications to support research projects.Participate in development and implementation of services and new initiatives to support HSS researchers.Stay current with the latest digital research tools and approaches.Create and maintain technical documentation for the research community.Participate in national and international projects as appropriate.Support training and awareness initiatives in the relevant best practices for cybersecurityOther Qualifying Skills And/or AbilitiesMaster’s degree in a field involving advanced research computing and/or similar relevant research experience. Experience working with supercomputing clusters. Comfortable with the Linux OS environment. Experience with various software development tools and practices such as: change management, debugging, testing, script profiling etc. Comfortable with one or more programming languages (e.g. Python, R). Advanced quantitative analysis skills. Creation, management or maintenance of cloud infrastructure projects. Cybersecurity and/or network experience. Previous work or research experience in an HSS related discipline or subject area. Comfortable working in French and English, both oral and written. Familiar with the academic environment, particularly the academic research setting. Excellent communication skills, including in-person and online presentationdelivery. Works well as part of a team. Can learn new technologies and skills quickly. Good time management and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Ability to take initiatives.
